Passport for Health
Most people would like to leave all worries behind while traveling. After all, your vacation should be a time of rest and relaxation. They try to think of most essentials that should be dealt with before leaving. Remember to stop delivery of mail and newspaper temporarily, make sure all appliances are off, have someone take care of your dog or cat, and have someone check on the house and car while you’re away.
Hotels are booked, ticket is in hand and you know you took care of everything. Or did you? Dental and medical emergencies can and do happen while vacationing abroad. There are some very important facts that most people don’t consider should a medical or dental emergency happen.
For example, infection control is an important aspect of every dental office in the U.S., or heavy penalties are fined. This may not be an issue in many other countries. I visited an island in the West Indies, where gloves, sterilization, and disposable needles were not a consideration in the care of dental treatment.
To avoid such horrible occurrences including the possible spread of infection, some common sense would be very helpful and should be considered, before you leave for your trip.
First and foremost, get a check-up and cleaning from your dentist. If you have dental insurance, call and find out if there is coverage or reimbursement during time of travel. Another important tip is to take along a dental emergency kit, which should include the following.
In a plastic container with a lid, place the following items for your dental kit:
- Disposable gloves (2-3 pairs), can be purchased, or ask your dentist for some.
- A small mouth mirror and dental pick, which are sold at most drug stores. In case they don’t sterilize their instruments, you can provide your own.
- Packet of gauze
- Small flashlight
- Temporary crown and bridge cement in case a filling or cap falls out (can be purchased at most
drug stores).
- Analgesic, such as Aspirin
The kit will be a security net in case of a dental emergency while traveling for business or pleasure.
